David Lees has been appointed as Grouting Expert for the Panel of Experts for Lesotho Highlands Water Project Phase 2.

The scheme was conceived in 1950s, with a feasibility study completed in 1986. Phase 1A included the 185m high Katse Dam , a 45km transfer tunnel and a 37km delivery tunnel, Phase 1B included the 145m high Mohale Dam a 32km interconnecting transfer tunnel and a 6.4kn transfer tunnel. Phase 1 was completed in 2004.

 

Phase 2 includes the 165m high Polihali Dam and a 48km transfer tunnel.

When complete the Lesotho Highlands Water project will have 5 dams and over 200km of tunnels and will transfer 2,000 millionm3 of water from Lesotho to South Africa every year at a cost of $8 billion to construct.
